My Journey Since Diagnosis: A Founder's Story

By Bill Witham·

My journey since being diagnosed has been deeply emotional. I've tried to stay strong for my wife, my children, and my friends, even on the days when my heart felt heavy and my mind wouldn't stop racing. While I have not experienced the physical limitations that so many endure from this horrible disease, its impact on my life has still been profound.

The Diagnosis

I was first diagnosed with Myxofibrosarcoma in July 2025. My initial surgery took place on July 18, 2025, but the pathology did not come back with clear margins. I underwent a second surgery on September 11, 2025. From November through December 2025, I completed 30 rounds of VMAT radiation therapy. Since then, I have had three sets of scans (CT and MRI), and as of August 14, 2026, I am NED — No Evidence of Disease. I will continue to have scans every three months.

A Changed Perspective

A diagnosis like this changes the way you think. It changes the way you see time. In the most sobering way, it reminds you that life is precious and far too short to let everyday troubles steal your joy or break your spirit.

Why Awareness Matters

Through sarcoma support groups, I've read story after story that no one should ever have to live. Not all of them have happy endings. That reality makes one thing painfully clear: more awareness is needed.

That is why Julie and I created Sarcoma Awareness of New England Inc., a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Our mission is to spread awareness and educate both the public and medical professionals about this rare, aggressive disease that affects children and adults alike.
